TAMPA — A 61-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed early Wednesday after a truck hit him at E Hillsborough Avenue and N 30th Street, police said.

The bicyclist was heading north toward Hillsborough Avenue on 30th Street at 6:10 a.m. He was traveling with other vehicles on the road and was just behind a truck, police reported. When the truck turned right onto Hillsborough, the bicyclist and truck collided, police said.

Police have not released the cyclist’s name, pending notification of his family. He was pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital.

The truck driver, Robert Wilson, 53, of Tampa, was not injured, and police said they do not expect he’ll be charged.

Because the bicyclist was traveling in traffic, he was required to follow the same laws as vehicles, so it should have slowed as the truck turned right. The truck had its signal on, indicating it was going to turn, said police spokeswoman Andrea Davis.
