A Muni bus ran over an injured cyclist’s bike and refused to stop following the incident this morning on Market Street.

Just after 8:30 a.m., the cyclist fell off his bike — details of how the accident occurred are still unknown — near the intersection of Fifth and Market streets, according to Judson True, spokesman for the Municipal Transportation Agency, which oversees Muni.

While the bike lay damaged on Market Street, the front tire was crushed by the rear wheel of a 5-Fulton Muni bus traveling outbound. Despite reported protests from the vehicle’s passengers, the operator continued to travel on its route, a violation of Muni protocol, according to True.

“Any time there is an incident like this, the operator should stop and assess the situation,” said True.

As part of the MTA’s standard procedures, the operator, whose name has not been released, has been placed under non-driving status and tested for drugs and alcohol while the agency investigates the matter. The San Francisco Police Department will also assist in the report.

Following the spill, the cyclist was transferred to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, True said.
