Report: City Lax On Bike Lane Restrictions

By: NY1 News

A new study shows taking a bike out for a spin through the city won’t keep riders free from traffic jams.
Professors at Hunter College found cars and trucks are taking up the space intended for cyclists in Manhattan.

Researchers surveyed 492 blocks with bike lanes in September and October.

They found 60 percent of the time, cyclists will encounter a vehicle during a stretch of just five to six city blocks.

The study says the city needs to try harder to restrict the lanes to bikes.

Sources say if vehicles are in a bike lane, they’re supposed to be written a ticket or moved by police.
