Woman bicyclist seriously injured in collision with car in downtMLive.com: Woman bicyclist seriously injured in collision with car in downtown Muskegon By Heather Lynn Peters MUSKEGON — A woman bicyclist was seriously injured Wednesday morning after she failed to stop at a red light, continued through a Muskegon intersection and was struck by a car, police said. The woman — whose name was not immediately known — was taken to a local hospital for treatment, said Muskegon Police Detective Sgt. Monica Shirey. The accident occurred at 10:19 a.m. when the bicyclist was traveling south on Terrace Street, attempting to cross Shoreline Drive, and “did not stop at the red light,” Shirey said. At that point, a white, two-door Chevrolet was heading east on Shoreline and wasn’t able to stop in time to avoid the bicyclist, Shirey said. The driver of that vehicle and a young passenger were not injured in the crash, she said. No other vehicles were involved. After the bicyclist was taken from the scene by ambulance, the visibly-upset driver of the vehicle sat on a curb alongside Shoreline with a toddler and answered questions from police officers. Shoreline was blocked off to oncoming traffic at First Street. A blue water bottle lay in the middle of an eastbound Shoreline lane, circled with orange chalk by an investigating officer, and an aqua-blue bicycle lay in the intersection. Shirey said she believes the bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Additional details were not available. Shirey said the accident remains under investigation. |
