PLAINFIELD — A Warren County truck driver will not face charges after he struck a young cyclist earlier this week.

Police said Thursday that Leo Leone, of the Broadway section of Franklin Township (Warren County), near Phillipsburg, was traveling northbound on Hill Street at about 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when he pulled up to a stop sign at the intersection of St. Mary’s Avenue. Turning left, Leone told investigators he felt a bump and discovered he had struck a 9-year-old boy riding a bike. A witness told police that the boy, a city resident, rode under the box truck as it started making the turn.

The boy was caught by the truck’s rear differential and dragged nearly 10 feet, but his injuries were not life-threatening, police said. He was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick as a precautionary measure and released later that day.
