OAKLAND — A bicyclist died this afternoon after being pinned under an AC Transit bus on MacArthur Boulevard in East Oakland, a bus line spokesman said.

The name of the victim, a 35-year-old Oakland man, was not released pending notification of his family.

The bicyclist had gotten off the bus at MacArthur Boulevard and Loma Vista Avenue, near the Hollywood Video store, and retrieved his bike from the front rack of the bus.

He began to ride eastbound on MacArthur when he swerved to avoid running into a car door that a 42-year-old Manteca motorist had opened, said police and AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson.

The biker hit the car door, then bounced off it into the back of the bus, Johnson said. He was pinned under the bus, Johnson said. Police said the bus drove over him. The incident occurred at 4:38 p.m., and the victim was taken to hospital, where he died, police said.

Under standard AC Transit procedure, the bus driver will be taken in for alcohol and drug tests, Johnson said. The bus had some passengers on it at the time of the incident, but no one else was injured, he said. Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The incident remains under investigation.
