KYW: Phila. Man Dies After Being Struck by Bicyclist

by KYW’s Pat Loeb

The death of a Philadelphia paralegal after he was hit by a bike has prompted a center city law firm to offer a $10,000 reward and urge stricter enforcement of bike laws.

Witnesses have come forward to say 39-year-old Andre Steed was knocked to the ground and left unconcious by a young white man, riding a white mountain bike, who fled the scene.

Steed died last weekend, ten days after the accident and one of his employers– Caesar, Rivise, Bernstein, Cohen & Pokotilow — are asking for the public’s help in finding the cyclist. Partner Stanley Cohen says they’re also hoping Steed’s death will call attention to reckless cyclists:

“They’re on the sidewalk, they disregard traffic signals, they’re speeding and we’ve heard from other people now who’ve been hit, they were knocked down and they thank God they’re head didn’t hit. They could’ve been Andre.”

Cohen says he’s not condemning all bicyclists, but he wants unsafe riders stopped.
