The San Antonio Express: Safe passing ordinance up for debate in S.A.

On a warm and partly cloudy Sunday morning in September, Tom Crosley decided to go for a bike ride.

It almost killed him.

On the way back from Elmendorf, Crosley waited for the red light to change at the intersection of the Interstate 35 access road and George Beach Avenue.

Joseph Svabek, 75, driving his Mercury Sable, approached Crosley from behind on the 40-mph access road. He wasn’t feeling well and put his head down, he later told police.

Crosley was hurled into the air and off the hood of the silver Sable. Still going forward, Svabek slammed into a Ford Focus also stopped at the light.

Svabek told police he didn’t see Crosley, and he didn’t get a ticket.

That’s the usual outcome…
